The Commonwealth of Massachusetts could be considered a founder state. Plymouth was the second permanent English settlement in North America. Colonists from England founded most of the towns in Massachusetts. Harvard University is the oldest higher learning institution in the United States.
It was in Massachusetts, that Boston became the "Cradle of Liberty." Agitation led to the independence from the British Empire. Shays' Rebellion, a group of farmers, rebelling, directly led to the United States Constitutional Convention. The first college for women, Mount Holyoke, was established in South Hadley. Recently Massachusetts was the first state to legalize same-sex marriage.
Massachusetts was dependent on fishing and trade with Europe. Manufacturing became prominent during the Industrial Revolution. Today the emphasis has shifted to services. Massachusetts has become a center for technology, education, health care, and financial services.
The name Massachusetts means, "Near the great hill," "by the blue hills," "at the little big hill," or "a range of hills." The official name is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Despite its name, the designation "Commonwealth" has no special meaning. The state is the same in all respects as all the other states.
The Native Americans, the Wampanoag, owned this land when the first colonists arrived in at Plymouth in 1620. They befriended the colonists and some say that if it weren't for the Indians, the colonists would not have survived. Later this area became a hotbed of abolitionists and helped the Union the most in the American Civil War. Massachusetts is recognized as the third most densely populated U.S. state. It has 809 people per square mile. One other note. The Puritans founded Massachusetts in 1620. Many churches descended from the Puritans, to include the Congregational/United Church of Christ, and the Unitarian Universalist Association. Later, the Catholics moved in mostly emigrating from Ireland. Mary Baker Eddy chose Boston as the main church of the Christian Scientists. The Shambala Center in Northampton and the Insight Meditation Center are some of the non-western religious centers in Massachusetts. The Roman Catholics are the largest denominations now.
