Kansas is the state that is located just east of Colorado and north of Oklahoma. It lies in the great central plain of the United States. Most people think of Kansas as the flattest state in the union. In truth, Kansas is rated somewhere between the 20th and the 30th flattest state. Its average elevation is 2,000 feet.
Kansas has the location of the geodetic center of North America. It is located in Smith County near Meades Ranch, Kansas. Early on, they used this spot as a central reference point for all maps produced by the U.S. Government.
The state is named for the Kansa Native American tribe that lived in that area. The word "kansa" means "people of the wind." Several Indian tribes considered Kansas home. They lived principally along the rivers in the state and hunted large herds of bison.
During its early years, "Free-Staters" from New England and pro-slavery settlers from Missouri, came to the state and created lots of friction, as the state was divided over what it was to become. The abolitionists won, and Kansas became a free state. After the Civil War, the Kansas population grew from immigrants looking for farmland.
In 1803, the United States secured Kansas as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Parts of it remained part of Spain until after the Mexican-American War in 1848. Kansas was finally admitted to the Union on January 29, 1861 as a slave-free state. The state still suffered when William Quantrill led his men on a raid into Lawrence, killing many people during the Civil War. Of course, Kansas is famous for Wild Bill Hickok, deputy marshal of Fort Riley. Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp were lawmen in that town. They needed each other because Kansas was a cattle state. In one year, 8 million head boarded trains for points east. Because of all the trouble caused by the cowboys of that time, Kansas was the first state to adopt the amendment prohibiting alcohol.
