"Aquethneck shall be henceforth called the Ile of Rods or Rhod-Island." Thus, Roger Williams christened the state of Rhode Island. The Massachusetts Bay Colony banished Roger Williams for his religious views. He settled at the tip of Narragansett Bay, where the Narragansett tribe granted some land to him. He named it Providence, a name that reflected religious freedom. Several other religious dissidents took up residence there as well.
Although Rhode Island maintained relative peace between themselves and the Indians, wars occurred until 1686 when James II of England began to enforce royal authority over all the colonies in British North America. Interestingly during later in this period, slaves became a part of this state's economy. The colony distilled rum and sold it in Africa for slaves in exchange for sugar from the Caribbean. Using this triangle method of trade, Rhode Island at one time controlled 60-% to 90% of the trade in African slaves.
Rhode Island was the first of the thirteen colonies to separate from the British Crown in 1776 and the last to ratify the Constitution. They held up to make sure the Bill of Rights was part of that document before they would affix their signatures. It was in Providence that a band of citizens attacked a British ship because it was enforcing very unpopular British trade regulations. A Franco-American force drove the British off the Aquidneck Island during the Revolution. The French Fleet forced the British to abandon their ships instead of giving them to the French. George Washington led troops from Newport, Rhode Island toward the Siege of Yorktown and the Battle of Chesapeake.
Rhode Island was the first state to respond to President Lincoln's request for help from the states during the Civil War. The state provided its industrial capacity to provide materials for the war effort. It was also the location of the United States Naval Academy for a short time.
Rhode Island is the smallest state in the Union. It is almost completely flat. The highest point of elevation in the entire state is 812 ft. at Jerimoth Hill.
This state might be small but its economy is anything but small. Due to its waterways, fishing is very important. Rhode Island has been a leader in the textile industry and is famous for its costume jewelry and silverware.
