Indiana, "the land of the Indians" as the name means, is located in the Great Lakes region. It is nestled between Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Illinois. The average altitude of Indiana is only 760 above sea level. The highest point is Hoosier Hill at 1,257 feet. The climate of Indiana is humid with plenty of cold in the winters and warm summers. The Royal Proclamation of 17863 gave these Indians the land west of the Appalachians as their territory.
Indiana is the smallest state west of Appalachian Mountains with a population of 6,483,802. Indiana had a gross state product of $214 billion in 2005. It has a few metropolitan areas with populations greater than 100,000.
The residents of Indiana call themselves "Hoosiers." No one knows for sure how that name came about. One theory is that it originated in an old saying from the early frontier days, and is an aberration of the words "Who's here?"
