Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was looking for the legendry Cibola, the Seven Cities of Gold, when he came upon what is known as Utah. Very few people settled there because of the dessert nature of the area.

By the time Mexico got its independence from Spain, Utah became a part of Mexico in 1821. During theses, earlier year’s, fur traders frequented the area. As a consequence, the city of Provo and Ogden were named after them.

In 1847, Brigham Young brought the first band of settlers to the Salt Lake Valley. Subsequently, 70,000 pioneers settled there. It was quiet there and those people could practice their religion without being bothered by others. This aspect brought others to the area and it grew.

The United States captured New Mexico and California in the Mexican-American war. This area became U.S. territory. It resulted in the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago in 1848. The Utah territory was created later. It was then that they gave the area name of Utah after the Utes in the area.

The Mormons began to have trouble with the U.S. Government because of their practices of polygamy and plural marriage. These practices did not set well with other U.S. citizens.

The government sent a secret expedition into the area. It was an attempt to quell the rebellion. This led to the Mountain Meadows massacre where 120 immigrants killed immigrants from Arkansas and Missouri. Further tensions arose between the government and the settlers. Therefore, troops entered the territory and took control.

The Civil war causes troops to leave Utah to fight in the conflict. The area went back to the Mormons for a while. After the territory agreed to ban polygamy, Utah was granted state-hood in 1896.
