The United States captured New Mexico and California in the Mexican-American war. This area became U.S. territory. It resulted in the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago in 1848. The Utah territory was created later. It was then that they gave the area name of Utah after the Utes in the area.
The Mormons began to have trouble with the U.S. Government because of their practices of polygamy and plural marriage. These practices did not set well with other U.S. citizens.
The government sent a secret expedition into the area. It was an attempt to quell the rebellion. This led to the Mountain Meadows massacre where 120 immigrants killed immigrants from Arkansas and Missouri. Further tensions arose between the government and the settlers. Therefore, troops entered the territory and took control.
The Civil war causes troops to leave Utah to fight in the conflict. The area went back to the Mormons for a while. After the territory agreed to ban polygamy, Utah was granted state-hood in 1896.
