Sixty five miles northwest of Las Vegas is the area known as Frenchman Flat. It was here that the first nuclear bomb exploded on January 27, 1051.
Nevada, the 36th state of the union, achieved statehood on October the 31, 1864. The name Nevada is a shortened version of Sierra Nevada Mountains, which means, "snow-capped mountain range". This mostly dessert state was inhabited by the Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe tribes until it was claimed by the Spanish. The Mexicans took it over during the Mexican War of Independence. The United States acquired it because of the Mexican-American War, and it was incorporated as part of the Utah Territory.
The discovery of silver led to an increase in population, which resulted in the creation of the Nevada Territory. This state is often called the "Silver State" for that reason. Nevada is famous for being one of only two states to expand its borders after it became a state. It did this by absorbing the part of Pah-Ute County in the Arizona Territory west of the Colorado River. Miners discovered gold in the area, and the government at that time thought it would be better if Nevada oversaw the population increase that would result.
This state is famous for its gambling and loose marriage laws. Interestingly, gambling was banned in 1909. It lost its advantage because of the decline in mining and agriculture, so it legalized gambling again in 1931. The states thought at the time that it would be a short-term fix until agriculture, mining, and more permanent businesses returned. Instead, it became the gambling center of the Southwest.
Today, the tourists industry is the largest contributor to the state's economy. In 2007, it netted 127 billion from areas such as Las Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Laughlin. Second to that, 2.84 billion tons in gold was mined in Nevada in 2000, and silver production was 69 million tons in 2004.
