The "Garden State," New Jersey, was the property of Native Americans for more than 2,800 years. The Lenape lived along the coastal area. Later the Dutch and Swedes created the first European settlements there. The British gained control making it the Province of New Jersey. They gave control of it to Sir George Carteret and John Berkeley, First Baron Berkeley of Stratton. Carteret was born there.

The Channel Island of Jersey gave sanctuary to the King. Charles II of England was proclaimed King in the Royal Square of St. Helier, following the execution of his father, Charles I. After that, Charles II gave his brother, who became King James II, the area. James divided it up and gave the area between the Hudson and the Delaware to Baron Berkeley.

New Jersey is nestled in the metropolitan area of New York and Philadelphia and is surrounded by Boston, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. It is the most densely populated state in the United States. Early in the 19th century, New Jersey was the center of factories in Elizabeth, Paterson, and Trenton. They helped drive the industrial revolution. Because of its location, the northern part of the state lies in the New York metropolitan area. Many of the residents commute into the city for work.

The Northwestern New Jersey is known as the "Skylands". It is a much-wooded rural area with mountains. The coastal area, known as the "Shore," along the Atlantic Coast is located in the central-east and southeast. The residents there are of the typical coastal kind who enjoy the ocean and fish for a living. The central-west and southwest areas of New Jersey are in metropolitan Philadelphia, which includes the Delaware Valley. Finally, the southern part of New Jersey consists of pine and oak forests. The population here is much less than the rest of the state.

Rivers abound in New Jersey. They include the Hudson, Delaware, Raritan, Passaic, Hackensack, Rahway, Musconetcong, Mullica, Rancocas, Manasquan, Maurice, and the Toms. New Jersey is famous for its religious diversity. The Congregationalists, Presbyterians, Dutch Reformed, Quakers, Anglicans, all settled in this area. Because of the proliferation of rivers with access to the sea, New Jersey became a Mecca for fishing, and shipping.
