King Charles II, named South Carolina after his father Charles I. “Carolus” is Latin for Charles. This king gave a royal charter to several aristocrats because they helped him retain his crown. English settlers from the Barbados called this area their home. Later the Spanish occupied Northern Carolina and established Fort Caroline. The Native Americans fought the Spaniards and drove them further down south toward Florida, Cuba, Mexico, and South America.

John Locke wrote a constitution for the colony. It covered such topics as how to divide the land, and a social caste system. Carolina split into two distinct colonies because of political differences. Some settlers wanted political power. Carolina became two royal colonies. The farmers took over the northern part and began to grow tobacco. The southern part grew crops and profited by their harbors. As with many of the northern states, the people of this region imported slaves. These slaves were imported from the rice growing part of Africa and greatly helped in the rice production in South Carolina, but at a great human cost.

Due to their proximity to the sea, the state created dams and canals that helped irrigate the land for the rice fields. Cultivation of indigo became an important part of this country's economic growth in this time. Indigo was valuable to the textile industry as it was used in dyes.

South Carolina became the first state to ratify Articles of Confederation, which later turned was replaced by the Constitution. British loyalists helped the British capture South Carolina. Later, the Battle of Cowpens, 1781, forced the British to evacuate their troops. Many of the loyalists and slaves went with them. This marked the beginning of the end of the hold the British held on the colonies. South Carolina ratified the United States Constitution on May 13, 1788.

South Carolina was the first state to resist Federal tariff laws of 1828 as unconstitutional. They passed the Ordinance of Nullification and declared that South Carolina was not subject to the tariffs. President Andrew Jackson threatened to use whatever force necessary to compel compliance with the federal law. This Force Bill passed by congress was the first legislation denying states the right to succeed. Soon after, the state convention countermanded the Ordinance of Nullification. The seeds were laid to what became the Civil War. As soon as Lincoln became president, this state became the first state to succeed from the Union.

South Carolina became a center for the textile industry. It also grew tobacco, soybeans, rice and cattle.
