The District of Columbia, or as it is known today, Washington, DC, has a unique place in American history and importance. The U.S. Constitution allowed for the creation of a federal district that would be the seat of the Federal government. Therefore, it is not a state but a federal enclave. The federal government directly controls it, unlike other states that control their own territory. The city of Washington, named after George Washington, lay east of the city of Georgetown.

In 1871, those cities along with some outlying area were combined to for what is known as Washington, DC. Washington DC, is located on the north bank of the Potomac River, the one Washington crossed in the famous painting. It is bordered by the states of Virginia and Maryland. It has a population of approximately 601,000 residents. That population rises to well over a million because of the people pouring in from outlying areas to work in our nation's capital. The whole Metro area which includes Washington D.C. has a population of about 5.6 million.

Washington D.C. is the center of all three branches of the U.S. government. Lots of the treasure of the United States is there as well. That includes the monuments and the museums. Washington is the host for 176 foreign embassies and is the head quarters for the World Bank. The District's government is made up of a mayor and a city counsel of 13 people. Even though this is the case, the United States Congress, has complete authority over the district's government and may change or overturn any law it wishes.

Long distance phone service in DC is the best, as you might imagine, being the seat of government and the home of so many official offices. All the major companies are there and want your business. Many local companies that want your business, as well. One local company offers small business plans which start with $10 per month, 5 cents/minutes and 25 cents a minute calling card. They also have toll-free rates. One local cable company is fighting the penchant of companies to take advantage of the area to charge exorbitant rates and has offered plans with unlimited local and long distance calling. They say they want to tailor the service to your needs.

If you are in Washington D.C. and you need long distance business service, there are many companies who offer you a wide range of plans, to meet your needs. That includes unlimited long distance calling, and the convenience of calling cards.
