South Dakota has a rich history of events that occurred along its path to statehood. This land belonged to several tribes of Indians including the Crow and the Lakota Sioux after which they named the state. Before them, the Mound Builders lived in South Dakota.

The La Verendrye brothers explored the region and claimed it for France to be part of greater Louisiana. The Sioux became the dominant Indian group in the area. The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon Bonaparte, in 1803 and along with it both North and South Dakota. President Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark there to explore the new territory. The fur trading post at Fort Pierre began the immigration into the area.

In 1858, the Sioux signed the 1858 Treaty giving most of the eastern South Dakota to the United States. Some people discovered gold in the Black Hills in 1874, during an expedition led by George A Custer. The expedition was in violation of the treaty that gave the western half of South Dakota to the Indians. The gold find drew many people to the area seeking a fortune. The Indians refused to give up their land to the miners and war broke out. The US defeated the Indians and broke up the Great Sioux Reservation into five reservations. The Supreme Court made congress pay the Indians for the seizure of the mining land but the Sioux refused it. They wanted their land instead. The Wounded Knee Massacre happened at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in 1890 where 31 soldiers and 146 Sioux were killed. That was the last major conflict between the Sioux and the United States.

In 1927, George Gutzon, began construction on what was to become the Mount Rushmore Memorial in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. It consisted of 60-foot sculptures of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. It covers 1,278 acres, and attracts about 2 million people annually.

South Dakota has been an agriculture state for many years. Recently, tourism and financial service industry has diversified the economy. Citibank moved its credit card division to Sioux Falls in 1981.
