Business Long Distance in Vermont, Home of the Green Mountain Boys

Vermont, the maple syrup state, once belonged the Algonquian and Iroquois Indians. These natives were probably here when the first colonists arrived. Vermont is bordered on the north by Quebec, Canada. France owned it in the earlier colonial period. They gave it to Great Britain after being defeated in the French and Indian war in 1763.

This area was part of the New Hampshire Grants for many years. New York and New Hampshire argued over the land. This dispute brought out the Green Mountain Boys militia who defeated the new immigrants. That led to the formation of the Vermont Republic in 1777 during the Revolutionary War.

A couple of important battles were fought in this state. One of the most famous involved General Stark. He attacked the British column at Hoosick, New York. His men killed or captured the entire British detachment. This result so devastated General Burgoyne that he never recovered. He finally surrendered his entire force later.

Vermont became a state in 1791. The name Vermont probably came from the French les Verts Monts that meant “the Green Mountains.”

IBM is Vermont’s largest employer. It provides about 25% of all manufacturing jobs in Vermont. This provides about $1 billion of the state’s economy. Health care was the second largest employer. Vermont quarries more slate than any other state in the union. In addition, dimension stone, stone that has been cut and fabricated, is the largest quarry producer.

In addition to the above, tourism is a vital industry. Many people visit the ski resorts in the winter. There are about 13 of them. In the summer, they attend the various resort hotels. Vermont is the only state in this areas that does not have a coast line.

Although Vermont does not have a balanced budget amendment in its state constitution, it has had a balanced budget since 1991. This is accomplished by the state lottery, liquor control, and an employment Compensation Trust fund.

Finally, Vermont was one of only four states to have been an independent nation. This state is very politically astute. The state voted against Franklin D. Roosevelt in all four elections. Some in the state want a second Vermont Republic, and were thinking of pushing succession.
