North Carolina is one of the most interesting of the 13 original colonies. The Spanish attempted to establish a settlement there in as early as 1567. Juan Pardo moved into the area and established a fort at Fort San Juan. He left 30 men there and went inland to establish five more. The adventure only lasted 18 months and the local Indians, the Mississippians, killed 119 of the 120 men he left at each fort.
Originally, part of the Province of Carolina, with South Carolina, the two separated in 1729. Farmers, just wanting to eke out an existence, settled the area. They had no towns or cities, and the pirates were constantly causing them problems along the coast.
Cotton and tobacco were the main staples after 1800, and the eastern area became a plantation system based on slavery. They remained that way until after the Civil War when Lincoln abolished slavery. They were second to last of the Southern states to succeed from the union in 1861. Of the 125,000 North Carolina soldiers who fought in the war, almost 45,000 died of the war or disease.
After the Reconstruction Era, most of the plantation owners lost slave-based revenue, and the slaves received no reparations for their condition. In 1865, a system of legal segregation pushed blacks into a second-class citizenship that lasted until 1964. Cotton mills resurrected the state in the late 19th century and tobacco made a comeback during that time.
The New Deal farm program helped the farmers of the state significantly and helped to improve the economy. After World War II, the economy began to perk up and major towns such as Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham solidified the industrial base. The 90s saw North Carolina become a major banking center. One very important historical event related to this state was the Wright Brothers flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903.
The total gross state product was $424.9 billion in 2010. The state employed 4.5 million in 2011, and is a major economic factor in the region.
