Frank Sinatra made famous the song, "New York, New York", and even though old blue eyes is no longer with us in person, his spirit lingers whenever his famous song is played in the city that never sleeps. As famous as the city is, many people do not realize that there is a state surrounding the city that, while not as heavily populated, has wonders to behold. I grew up in New York State, and I can tell you that the state is, in many respects, a microcosm of the rest of the country. You can find everything from ski resorts to ocean-side beaches, state and national parks, rivers, lakes, mountains, and valleys.
The state played several key roles during the French and Indian wars, as well as the War of Independence, including key battles in the North in the Saratoga area where Fort Ticonderoga may be found, all the way down to "New Amsterdam" which today is known by a more famous name, New York City. During the winter, the northern half of the state is among coldest and snowiest areas in the country, particularly with lake effect snow coming from Lake Ontario. Summers are sweltering, hot and humid. Spring and Fall were always my favorite seasons. Spring came late in April (although it officially begins toward the end of March like it does everywhere else), and Fall is punctuated by some of the most beautiful foliage you will find anywhere. Leaf peepers can be found everywhere. I remember summers where my family and I would go up Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid. The views of the red, orange, yellow, green, and brown trees in the valley areas below were just plain stunning most years.
New York City, also known as "The Big Apple", has some of the most famous landmarks in the world, including the world famous Metropolitan Opera House, Times Square, the site of the former twin towers in lower Manhattan, Wall Street, Greenwich Village, Madison Square Garden, Central Park, and much, much more. The city is the home of the world famous New York Yankees baseball franchise in the Bronx and the Amazin' Mets in Queens. Up until the late 1950s, it was also home to the Giant (now in San Francisco) and the Dodgers ('dem bums who deserted Brooklyn for the freeways of L.A.).
While the tax structure is extremely expensive, thus making the "rust belt" of the middle part of the state from Albany to Buffalo into a permanently depressed region, New York City itself has long been a great place to do business. Many famous success stories have emerged from its crowded streets.
If you do business in New York, you need great long distance phone service. You'll find some great rates on this page.
