Long Distance for Businesses in the Commonwealth of Virginia

Mother of Presidents is the name given to The Commonwealth of Virginia, because eight American Presidents were born in this state. Located on the Atlantic Coast in the Southern part of the United States, this Blue Ridge State is famous for many things to include its Blue Ridge Mountains. The Virginia General Assembly is the oldest legislature in America. It is famous for its efficiency, and has been ranked high on the Pew Center on The States. It prohibits its governors from serving consecutive terms.

Queen Elizabeth I gave Walter Raleigh a charter to create a colony north of Florida. In 1584, Raleigh sent an expedition to the region, which includes the present Virginia. The first permanent English settlement, Jamestown, named after King James I, was the result. When the London Company went bankrupt in 1624, the settlement became a British crown colony. During these days, the settlers fought the Indians, and as a result gave them an uneasy feeling about any tribes. Tobacco became popular in Europe and that brought many more settlers to the area. The need for labors created a system where colonists were given land for each indentured servant they were responsible for bringing to the new world. At one time indentured servants made up 80+% of the population.

British taxes brought on the rally cry of "no taxation without representation". Patrick Henry and Richard Henry Lee were among those who led the rebellion. After that, the people from Virginia began to work with the other colonies to coordinate their actions. This led to the Virginia Declaration of Rights and the Declaration of Independence.

Virginia voted to secede from the United States over slavery and state rights in 1861. Virginia joined the Confederate States of America, and the confederation chose Richmond, Virginia as its capital.

The country built the pentagon in Northern Virginia during the Second World War near Washington D.C. Many other government buildings are constructed there as well. The State has the highest concentration of technical workers anywhere in the United States. Computer chips overturned tobacco as the top export in 2006.

Forbes Magazine declared Virginia the best state in the union for business 4 years running. Part of that recognition is the fact that Virginia has 20 Fortune 500 companies in the state.
