Michigan became a state on January 26, 1837. Before that, it had been a popular area for fishing and furs. The Algonquians, the Ottawa, the Chippewa, and the Potawatomi Indians were the first people the colonists first saw when they came to this area. The French were the first to come to this area in the 17 century. French missionaries came here and established Catholic missions in 1671. Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit in 1701. Their plan was to establish a community that would discourage the British from taking the area. They built a fort here and named it Fort Pontchartrain.

Antoine's wife moved to Detroit and became the first women to settle in this wilderness area. Fur trading was becoming a lucrative business so they established Fort Michillmachinac to protect their fur trade. Following the French and Indian War, Quebec City went to the British. This resulted in the Treaty of Paris, in 1763. They now had control of this area so Michigan went to the British. Detroit became an important supply point for the British during the American Revolutionary War.

The Jay Treaty of 1794 ended the British hold over this territory. The Americans did not gain control of this area until the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. After the Erie Canal connected the Great Lakes to the Hudson River, the area started to receive an influx of settlers. They were able to ship out grain, lumber, and iron ore, and population began to increase. By 1835, they had enough citizens to form a state government.

After Henry Ford built his first auto plant in Highland Park, the auto industry took off. Detroit became the center for an industry that transformed the United States and the world. This industry attracted immigrants from Europe and across the United States. Many people came here to find work when other areas were not hiring.

At one time, the influx of people from other areas led to more than 30 languages spoken in the area. Ethnic communities sprung up everywhere. These people greatly contributed to the diverse culture in Detroit. The Motown sound originated here, and made many of the singers and groups of the 60s famous.
